Timeline

1979

The Original Kingfisher Lodge

In its earliest days, the Kingfisher was an inn and campground. While the accommodations were modest, locals knew to come for the incredible views of the Strait of Georgia and Coast Mountains.

2005

A New Direction

When Bill Brandes became the new owner of the Kingfisher, he ushered in a new era for the property. A long-time admirer of the location, with its stunning natural beauty and tranquility, Bill saw the Kingfisher’s potential, envisioning a destination where guests could enjoy several unique experiences all in one place. With the purchase, he initiated a journey of growth and transformation for the resort, one that continues to this day.

2017

Spearheading Culinary Excellence

With the aim of providing guests with an elevated gastronomic experience, the old restaurant was replaced with two brand-new spaces: Ocean7 Restaurant, which features spectacular ocean views and specializes in fine dining, and AQUA Bistro & Wine Bar, where guests can enjoy casual fare and creative cocktails.

2018

Cultivating Serenity

Where a patch of grass once stood came something much bigger and more beautiful. The Serenity Gardens feature pathways that wind through exquisitely landscaped gardens, with the sounds of water rushing over stones and gentle waterfalls illuminated by an ambient glow. Nestled in the gardens, seven intimate seating areas with fire bowls invite guests to enjoy their own outdoor haven. In that same year, we began the renovation of the Ocean Courtyard Rooms and the Craftsman Building and our Pacific Mist Spa change rooms.

2019

Creating Winter Magic

Inaugurating what has become a cherished annual tradition, the first Winter Lights display saw the Serenity Gardens decked in hundreds of thousands of lights, captivating and delighting guests. Since then, winters at the Kingfisher have been dazzling celebrations, with illuminated flowers and trees lending the gardens a truly magical feel.

2022

Elevating Every Suite

With his love for architecture and design, Bill next turned his attention to overseeing the design and renovation of the resort’s most luxurious accommodations, starting with the Penthouse Suite.

2023

Earning Accolades

The Kingfisher was named BC Hotel of the Year, a proud achievement that honoured our unwavering vision, devoted team and loyal guests from the Comox Valley, Vancouver Island and around the world. Maintaining momentum, we started renovating the Beachfront Suites, with new custom designs transforming these spaces into elegantly modern accommodations befitting the Kingfisher experience.
